Sapiens has only been walking upright on our planet for a tiny fraction
of the time that began billions of years ago when the Earth developed
into a recognizable body orbiting the Sun. In that short period, during
which the thinking and discriminating abilities of Man were honed to sharpen
the faculties necessary for inventiveness, it is in the last two centuries
that new inventions have surfaced at an ever accelerating pace.
New inventions can be used for good or evil, well used or abused. The chances that inventions or discoveries will be abused increase with the degree of advancement or complexity in the technology inherent in them.
The Earth is not populated with members of animal Homo Sapiens that have a standard degree of intelligence, imagination, or inventiveness related to the common good of the race. A vast majority of humans are left behind in wonder and must rely on the inventive technicians, expecting or hoping, for honesty and good intentions.
When there is a relatively large class of those with advanced knowledge and inventiveness, competition appears in the race to advance technology further or to sabotage the technological abilities of rivals. The dangers of sabotage or antisocial use increase as technology expands. Those dangers have become more apparent in recent years.
Many of the explosions in technology have followed the invention of the computer, born in the 2 nd World War, becoming ubiquitous in the last twenty years of the century, spawning the World Wide Web of the Internet. Explosive is possibly the only way to describe the expansion of the Internet around the world. Unfortunately, much of what has exploded is of a frivolous nature, a nuisance and is time wasting for those surfing the web.
The fact that the Internet is global, overlapping many cultures and political systems, makes for easy misunderstandings and sabotage. It is now possible that more time is being spent developing safeguards to the security and technical safety of the computers linked to the Internet, than to further development, as each new development brings further problems with it. So many companies are developing web sites and software to advance technology, they only add traffic congestion on the web.
How many web sites, out of the millions mushrooming, can be visited without concentrated discrimination? Much time at a computer is wasted, advertising matter intrudes that requires rejection or deletion. The more sites, the more fodder for hackers to cause disruption.
Progress in not always beneficial to humans as they spend more of their waking hours sitting in front of a screen and not using their legs, eyes in a fixed focus. Many move from the workplace to their own screens in the home. New inventions are described as showing progress. If something more lethal is developed, it is thought progress from the user’s point of view, not so from that of the victims. Of interest, many drugs touted as life saving can kill.
An amazing technological development has been that of the artificial satellites orbiting our planet. Many modes on communication now rely on them. One must consider that they are not only susceptible to sabotage, with the number of satellites increasing at an alarming rate, and the fact that many obsolete ones have left debris in space with fragments traveling at 17,000 miles an hour, collisions with other satellites or space transport vehicles must eventually hinder space exploration.
Nature still shows us intermittent sunbursts, the intensity of which can at some time in the future be catastrophic with severe electromagnetic disturbances of the atmosphere. Satellites could be harmed by them and made useless.
We were reminded of the forces of Nature in 1999, a year distinguished by an increase in earthquakes, volcanic activity apparent on land and in the hidden depths of the oceans. Severe weather conditions linked to how the oceans behave have caused disastrous floods in many areas of the planet. Hurricanes have produced their tolls.
Problems and benefits derive from the oceans, which still hold many secrets in their depths awaiting to be discovered. Some secrets have been revealed, the most important being that we now know our very existence depends on the processes of life forms which control the percentage of oxygen in our immediate atmosphere. It is around 21% of the air we breathe. Any higher level, by only a few percentage points, and everything on the planet would burn up, including us. Should the percentage of oxygen fall too much, life would be unsustainable for humans.
As we have looked farther out into space and studied the universe in which Earth is but a speck, we have also observed the near as well as the far using magnification methods that reveal worlds within worlds of organisms. Those microorganisms represent our ancestors, not only that, we depend on their continuing existence in the oceans, on the land and in the bodies of plants and animals. They thrive in the air, soil, the sand, the rivers and lakes as well as the oceans. They can heal, can destroy, but they benefit us in such a way that, without them, life on Earth cannot survive.
We are but animals within a wide range of species. Humans have been blessed or cursed with abilities that allow us to have some say in how our future existence unfolds. It is an awesome responsibility because we have been placed (or have placed ourselves) in the position of guardians of the integrity of the biosphere, at the same time having the ability to destroy it and ourselves with it.
Empires and those of various cultures have arisen and disappeared, none have yet shown a capability to fully recognize the responsibility of Man towards sustaining our planet in a worthwhile state.
Only a few are aware of that responsibility and their voices for the most part go unheeded. However loud those voices, it is wishful thinking to consider any prudent actions will be taken to pay homage to our biosphere on which we depend.
