Michael caught the first glimpse of Mavis when he looked down from an upstairs window and saw her sunbathing in the backyard of the house next door. It was a good day for sunbathing, there was a light breeze and the air was full of summer smells only slightly tainted by the aromas from dustbins in the alley that had not had their lids properly secured.

The potential lover was used to stronger smells as he spent many hours of the day working on the docks where he unloaded fish from the trawlers. Michael was fussy about his own smell and spent a considerable amount of time when he got home grooming himself to acquire a masculine smell that would be acceptable to the neighbors.

He had a friend across the street who, like Michael, liked to stay up late at night. They were of that youthful age when prowling the streets was an inherited trait, the prowling helping to expand a view of the neighborhood and knowledge of the personalities of those who lived there. It was raging hormones that were controlled with difficulty that made the main reason for their prowling be a search for those of the opposite sex who might show some response to their advances.

Malcolm, Michael's friend and fellow prowler, was a couple of years older than Michael and never ceased giving advice concerning techniques for attracting a female and pointing out what were desirable characteristics and appearances to be looked for in potential girlfriends. He insisted they should not be scruffy or hippie-like in appearance, not show any suggestion when approached and have a pleasant voice and accent. Malcolm stressed that the voice of a girl gave away an untold number of things about her.

Michael respected Malcolm's advice and dutifully noted any information he acquired from him regarding possible courtship. The problem was that whenever Michael did meet, or just see, a girl that attracted him, Malcolm pulled seniority and damped his enthusiasm. He thought very seriously of ceasing the prowling with Malcolm and taking off on his own, possibly in another neighborhood. But the view he'd had of Mavis deterred him from looking elsewhere.

As of yet, Michael had only been able to see Mavis from a distance from his own house when she was in her garden. She never seemed to leave the property and they had never met when he was prowling. He was sure she remained in her home at nights. He had to think of some way to get her to notice him before Malcolm stuck his nose into his affairs on their side of the street. Let Malcolm find a girlfriend for himself on his own side of the street.

Before risking an approach to Mavis and making his existence known to her, he though he had better get into better physical shape so he started a rigorous schedule of exercise and activity. His running speed was showing the benefit of working out and he could jump higher and could clear some fences at a run.

Looking at the fence in Mavis's garden he realized that he'd never be able to jump that high. One night he climbed on the top of her fence to survey the rest of the property and check if there was some other way that didn't entail knocking on the front door, introducing himself, and asking for a date. Reasoning comes hard for some teenagers.

The weather had been a bit wet for a few days and Mavis had not appeared except when he saw her one day come out, go out of view behind some bushes for a time, then return to the house. She was possibly doing a little gardening while it was raining, most likely attending to some herbs. Michael had always enjoyed the smell of herbs. There was a nice herb garden near his kitchen window. When he felt he had some body odor that didn't please him and certainly wouldn't please any young girl, he washed as carefully as he could then rubbed a mixture of herbs in his hair.

Michael's mother had been observing Michael's behavior and noticing the careful grooming and suspected there was a girl in the picture somewhere. She quizzed him about it in such a forceful way that he had to admit he was attracted to Mavis but he also had to admit he hadn't been able to approach her or talk to her. He said, "You might call it a platonic relationship." His mother replied that she would call it more appropriately a flatonic relationship, and would see what she could do to have him meet her.

Fortunately for Michael, his mother and Mavis's were friends and often had an afternoon chat. He thought his mother could put in a word for him. His hopes didn't work out too well. The subject of Michael and Mavis having a date did come up in one of those chats. Michael's mum was upset when Mavis's said she thought Michael wasn't quite big enough, as Mavis was quite a strapping girl and she couldn't see them being a loving pair. Mary, Michael's mum, felt a bit insulted by the insinuation that Michael wasn't good enough for Mavis and pointed out that her son was growing rapidly and getting stronger every day. He didn't need to go to a health club because he was following a clever strength building program he'd designed himself and he was paying attention to his appearance, which was more than most teenagers of his age were doing. She thought to add that he was very particular about his hygiene.
