National
Capital Lyme Disease Association - Dr. Joseph Burrascano,
Jr. M.D. spoke to the National Capital Lyme Disease Association October
5, 2003 at Sibley Hospital.
Dr. Burrascano, one of the nation’s leading authorities on Lyme disease, and author of the ILADS Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines, addressed the National Capital Lyme Disease Association at its October meeting. He spoke on “The Lyme Disease Complex” Multiple Tick-borne diseases . The meeting took place at the Ernst Auditorium, Sibley Hospital, from 2 to 4:30 PM. Dr. Burrascano addressed the complexity of Diagnosis and Treatment of Lyme disease and its co-infections. His talk is intended for both the general public and the medical community. Physicians were encouraged to attend. There was an opportunity for questions at the end of the program. There was no charge for admission. Dr. Burrascano has practiced in East Hampton, New York, an area endemic for Lyme for over 20 years. He is considered to be one of the worlds leading experts on diagnosing and treating Lyme and associated tick-borne diseases. He has seen and treated more than 7,000 Lyme patients. As author of one of the most widely followed treatment protocols for Lyme disease in the US. Dr. Burrascano has lectured on Lyme across the country and at international conferences. He is published in more than 16 medical journals and popular magazines. He has addressed Congressional committees and the military on the complexities of the disease. A founding member of the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS), he continues to serve on its board. Dr. Burrascano is a recipient of the 1998 Distinguished Physician Award. His treatment protocol is posted on the ILADS website at: http://www.ilads.org/burrascano_1102.htm Dr Burrascano has been publicly recognized for his work on Lyme disease, cited by book authors and interviewed frequently for television, radio and the print media, including the major television networks, The New York Times, Newsweek , and the Wall Street Journal to mention just a few. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection contracted from a tick bite that, if untreated or not treated early, can cause long-term persistent illness and death. Its harm and treatment problems were recently highlighted by the Washington Post in an August 5 article about author Amy Tan. That article can be found on the Internet at: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A19083-2003Aug4.html As the Post article reported, The Center for Disease Control receives notice of 20,000 new cases each year, but it is estimated that this figure represents only one-tenth of new cases contracted yearly. Lyme disease and its related co-infections are endemic in the Mid-Atlantic region, including the Washington DC area. All are welcome. For More Information on TOFU, please see last year's LymeInfo post: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lymeinfo/message/380 TOFU focused on Lyme awareness and education By ALEX GAYHART - Times Staff Writer Several years ago, Vicki Karam-Smith ran into Lovette Mott in the grocery store. As the two talked, they decided that an issue that has affected both their lives quite intimately, needed some support in the community. It was through this conversation and a support group that ensued, that Ticked Off and Fed Up (T.O.F.U.) began. T.O.F.U. is an organization that provides education and awareness services on tick- borne diseases, most importantly Lyme Disease. **** Public Service Announcement For Immediate Release Always Current Print: Approx 55 words Radio: 15 second spot (10 seconds if you talk really fast!)
