Humanity
around our globe is now linked in ways that could not have been imagined
a few decades ago. The hindrance of language differences still persists
however, raising a barrier preventing the appreciation of arts and cultures
of other nations if the appreciation is hindered by language.
That barrier is lifted in the arts of dance, painting, sculpture and music. As the performers in classical ballet are silent as regards any vocalizing, the performance can be presented with beauty and as a fairy tale without realistic social commentary. Only the accompanying orchestral music is heard. Classical ballet can be appreciated for its grace and beauty by peoples of all nations, of all political persuasions and religions, whatever their native language.
The opportunities are infrequent for many people to look at paintings and sculptures for a reasonable time that would allow for full appreciation of what the artists have presented. The ballet, however, allows the length of time necessary to appreciate the beauty in motion as it tells a story, which is often vague without detracting from the pleasure of the spectacle. The story can have little relationship to the every day life of members of the audience. The same story may be of minimal importance except to the producer and the choreographer who are using it as a canvas on which to paint a moving picture of human frames expressing emotions in movement as required to demonstrate the relationships with other dancers, all blended in a natural precision with the music.
The mime of ballet overcomes the distraction of voice timbre, pitch, dialect and vocal expressions of anger, fear, relief, sadness, joy and other emotions wrapped in a foreign tongue. The marriage of dance and music can be perceived to a delightful degree that even the marriage of voice and music in opera cannot challenge, as far as it can be appreciated internationally.
Whether ‘modern dance’ can be truly classified as true ballet can be challenged unless it portrays beauty in movement without exhibitionist jerks with an unnatural ugliness.
Ice skating has now approached an excellence in graceful movements to justifiably use the term’ ballet on ice’, but the unnaturalness of the speed and the limitations placed by having skates attached to the feet, does not allow the softness, gentleness and passion that can be exhibited in classical ballet. Some ice skating performances come very close to classical ballet, but it is almost impossible to not notice the performers are on skates.
The devotion a ballet dancer must give to his or her art, as a performer, might well be of a greater intensity than the devotion any other performing artist. This should be appreciated by audiences as the dancers make what they are doing look less difficult than it really is. It is difficult and requires long and hard, often painful, training.
Those in an audience should appreciate the devotion, one really amounting to a sacrifice, of the dancers as those watching enjoy a brilliant performance.
