we turn a foe into a friendly lodger?
BB is a versatile organism with many tricks to ensure its pathological presence in a host enabling it to maintain its virulence even when attacked by antibiotics. It does that by altering its shape and form from the spiral to various L forms named after the Lister Institute in London where they were first studied.
The spiral can change into a filament, a cyst, granule, hooked rod or elbow.
They can change into different forms if nutrients for their growth are deficient, hardly the case when infecting the human body in which nutrients abound. The organisms that are not destroyed by antibiotics, and there are almost always survivors if the invading dose is more than minimal, change into the L forms when their cell walls are damaged as a form of defense. They are cell-wall-deficient bacteria.
The L forms expend lesser energy than the spiral form but in a suitable nutrient can return to the spiral for recognized as the spirochete. Even without doing that the L forms, even the granules, can be pathological and cause disease on their own account.
Small spirochetes develop within the cystic L forms and are released, so reproducing. The spirochete itself can sprout branchlike filaments each of which can become another spirochete.
It is a disaster for a victim of Lyme Disease that the spirochete can reproduce in favorable circumstances; in unfavorable circumstance such as exposure to antibiotics, the L forms can also reproduce providing a further flood of pathogenic organisms to attack many organ systems with a prevalence for the nervous system.
Victims of Lyme Disease are playing host to a very versatile and persistent pathogen. It is possible there is another approach to removing its pathogenicity other than by attacking the organism with anti-infectives. That way might be to satisfy the needs of the organism with a sufficiency enough to discourage reproduction so encouraging a stable load of bacteria, a measurable nutrient to be provided that is more desirable than that provided by the host. The sufficiency of the nutrient must be of an order to satisfy the spirochete but not in an excess of that which would encourage the production of L forms.
Wishful thinking but at least some exercise for the uninfected brain (as of the moment).
It is possibly a utopian hope that such a method of treatment could be developed. Its success would depend on the reason the spirochete invaded the host in the first place, to find a suitable breeding ground to ensure the continuation of its kind, or to spitefully cause disease and kill.
We know we cannot live without the minute living things as they are vital to an environment that sustains life for the larger entities including us, especially they are responsible for the advantageous composition of the air we breathe. They have vital functions in our guts and on our skins in a symbiosis, and play a part in most of the reactions of plants and animals, and the soil.
The above being so, it is hard to think the spirochete, when it invades us, does so for a malicious reason.
Addendum:- The above was written many years ago when we were first getting to know the activities of Borrelia burgdorferi. Now I know Bb is malicious and has gathered a few buddies to gang up with it to do us damage, I've changed my mind about it.
Bb is as malicious as it could possibly be and deserves all the ammunition we can throw at it and its co-conspirators.
