DENTAL HYGIENIST CAROL MARTIN GOT A TICK-BITE IN DANVILLE... THEN A MONTH LATER, SUDDEN ARTHRITIS-LIKE PAIN STABBED AT HER MUCLES AND JOINTS.

carol martin/- i was scared i went to my primary care doctor they'd never treated lyme they didn't know what to do.

DIFFICULT TO DIAGNOSE AND TREAT... CAROL MARTIN WENT ON INTRAVENOUS ANTIBIOTICS... BUT COULDN'T SHAKE THE SYMPTOMS UNTIL RECENTLY...
carol martin/- it was very hard on my family it was hard on me, but now I'm doing fine, the arthritic symptoms stopped after about 2 years of solid antibiotics.
fowler - experts say infection doesn't happen right away so effective prevention is as simple as a tick check especially under your socks and on other exposed skin areas, every thirty minutes while you're outdoors, that way you can find and remove ticks before they have a chance to make you sick.

[........unintelligible] about Lyme disease and think that it is mostly a problem on the east coast and that the only way to get it is by a tick bite ...but that is wrong on both counts. ktvu channel 2 health & science editor John Fowler [JF] reports:
JF: East Bay architect, Leal Charonnat [LC] and his wife, audiologist Terry Mitchell [TM] share many things, ..... a love of the outdoors, a fondness for animals .......... And a strange disease.
TM: I found a little black speck on my leg here and it ... didn't wash off...
JF: - It was a tick -
TM: ....... I didn't think anything about that- but then 3 days later, I had like, a bulls-eye rash, but I didn't know we had Lyme disease here in California.
JF: WE DO. Lyme disease is carried by ticks all across the Bay Area and the state. Virtually anyone can be at risk. Ticks are often in leaf litter near oak trees. The poppy seed sized black-legged tick can pass on dangerous bacteria when it feeds. Bacteria literally screw their way through cells anywhere in the body.
TM: ... I started developing a whole series of weird things ... arthritis, neuralgia, fatigue....
JF: ....... specialist Raphael Stricker [RS] has almost 500 Lyme disease patients. He says Lyme disease is on the rise. ...... He noticed that many of his patients' partners also have the disease. The Lyme bacteria is a spirochete related to syphilis and Lyme bacteria are found in semen and vaginal secretions.
Raphael Stricker: When mice are infected with Lyme disease they can transmit it just by contact. Not necessarily sexual contact, but by close contact. So based on that; There's evidence that you don't really need a tick to transmit the disease.
JF: [According to] Stricker's theory, sex and possibly even kissing may transmit the disease and sure enough when Leal Charonnat, Terry Mitchell's husband, took a blood test, .... He too, had Lyme disease.... he insists he has never been bitten by a tick.
LC: ...... secondary infection doesn't seem as strong.....
RS: We've recently been shown that tick saliva has a lot of different enzymes and factors that suppress the immune response and that may be responsible for the disease that results from a tick bite versus the disease type that results from other transmissions.
JF: ..... Transmission may be possible from mother to child in the womb...
Carol Martin: .......There's a chance that I could have been bitten as a child and then passed it on to other members of the family, not even knowing that it existed .......
JF: ........ Antibiotics, sometimes years of continuous antibiotics, are needed to ease Lyme disease symptoms. But the key is testing; A sophisticated type of testing to discover the difficult to diagnose disease.... ...... One recent study suggested that up to 15% of the general population might be infected with the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, the vast majority shows no serious symptoms. Lyme disease! Including:
