The same tick that carries the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease, can also transmit other illnesses.
The most common are Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, and Bartonella henselae. It is estimated that up to 20% of the ticks with Lyme disease may have one of these other diseases.

Babesiosis is like malaria, with the symptoms of acute disease being fever, chills, vomiting and fatigue. It is usually self-limiting, except in patients who have undergone splenectomy. There are two forms of Ehrlichiosis: HGE (Human Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis) and HME (Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis).

HGE is primarily on the East coast, upper Midwest and California. HME is primarily in the Southeast, lower Midwest and Southwest. These acute diseases may have symptoms of fever, chills, vomiting and fatigue and require prompt antibiotics. Subclinical forms of these diseases may be present in patients with Lyme disease.

How do you get Lyme disease? From the bite of a tick you won't feel and aren't likely to see. And, because the little culprits are so tiny, most victims won't know they've been bitten and won't seek treatment. That's when years of undiagnosed suffering can begin.

Lyme disease symptoms often go undiagnosed because of a lack of specialized testing that isolates the disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the actual number of cases of Lyme disease may be ten times higher than the 20,000 cases reported.

I am pleased to announce that IGeneX, Inc. recently passed two inspections on September 7 and 8, 2005, for its biannual recertification from the State of California.  

A federal inspector also arrived simultaneously, indicating she was present due to the NY Times article August 23 which had made allegations against IGeneX laboratories. 

The inspection was intense, with a focus on the Western Blots which had been cited in the NY Times article.

The lab has been fully recertified, and the inspectors clearly saw the allegations were without merit.

Despite a volume of letters to the Times after the article by patients, groups, and doctors in support of IGeneX, nothing was printed by the Times.

IGeneX thanks all the Lyme community for your support. Perhaps the Times will relent and print another piece on this issue.
